WORKSHOP 1: POKING THE BEAR
THE ART OF WRITING HUMOUR with ROD CARLEY
Saturday May 17 11:00am - 12:00pm
Co. Lab, Goods & Co Marketplace
Humour is serious business.
E. B. White, American writer, editor, and longtime contributor to The New Yorker, once said this of writing humour: “Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested, and the frog dies of it.”
However, there are certain rules you can use to try your hand at a good joke, humour essay, or short humour piece.
This workshop will explore identifying different styles of humour (including finding your own), tips and techniques for writing humour: the K rule, the rule-of-threes, the comparison, subverting clichés, funny stories and anecdotes, timing and exaggeration, embracing the impossible, the element of surprise, irony, sarcasm, parody, and the rules for writing effective satire.
Registration is REQUIRED for this workshop.
