One People, One Planet, One Justice—Anthology Project: Building Community through the Arts
One People, One Planet, One Justice is a space for conversations on the role of creativity and the arts in the nurturing of just and sustainable communities. It assumes the inherent nobility of all human beings, and speaks to the undeniable fact of the interconnectedness of the human race. Humanity is one single species, and now technology, transportation, communication, economics, and cultural evolution have made the world smaller and made our interconnectedness undeniable. Injustices in one part of the world result in ripples that can be felt everywhere, even if those ripples are not always recognized.
Yet, even as the world has become more interconnected, people are increasingly isolated. A deep-seated longing for community is fertile ground for those who would promote xenophobia and zero-sum-identities. But the longing for community and connectedness also sometimes results in creative efforts to promote unity while embracing diversity.
The interconnectedness of humanity with the natural world is also becoming more apparent day by day. The ability of the human race to exploit nature has outpaced its wisdom, and the abuse of the natural world is intimately connected with dissention, disunity, and injustice. It seems increasingly likely that solutions to present day environmental challenges are fully intertwined with the pursuit of unity and justice.
One People, One Planet, One Justice is interested in art that explores such topics, asks difficult questions, and seeks to touch the human spirit.
The Initiative
Initiated in 2023, the first main activity of One People, One Planet, One Justice was an art exhibit that opened in October 2024 at the Goods & Co. gallery in Thunder Bay. The initiative also hosts occasional workshops and other conversation spaces for artists, writers, and other creatives.
A repeat art exhibit is being planned for 2027. And now One People, One Planet, One Justice is also expanding into literature, with plans for an anthology.
A Short Fiction Anthology
NOWW intends to publish an anthology of short stories as a part of the initiative. Stay tuned for details of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, tentatively scheduled for early 2027.
For writers, a Call for Submissions of short stories is also expected in early 2027, but you may want to start working on a story now.
We will be looking for stories that speak to the One People, One Planet, One Justice theme. Stories should be between 2,500 and 12,500 words. (BUT… anything more than 8,000 words will need to be very, very good. The sweet spot is probably between 4,000 and 8,000 words.)
One People, One Planet, One Justice, although it revolves around social justice and pressing social, political, economic, and environmental issues, is non-partisan. It goes beyond labels and partisan politics. We will be seeking good stories well told, not polemics, propaganda, or policy proposals. The two main selection criteria will be literary quality and fit with the theme.
We’re interested in any genre. Fantasy, horror, contemporary literary fiction, western, and sci-fi are all fair game. If you want to write a historical police procedural romance that speaks to the theme, we’ll consider it.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not the official Call for Submissions. That will come after the Kickstarter campaign in early 2027 and will depend on how successful it is. Pay rates will be announced after the Kickstarter.
